The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry
The Great Kapok Tree is a wonderful story with beautiful pictures of the Amazon rain forest and its creatures. Not only does the book show the diversity of the forest, but it also mentions many of the serious concerns facing the forest and the important role of the individual in making conscious choices to protect the environment. All of this is accomplished by describing the effects of cutting down one tree, which would cause habitat loss, soil erosion, pollution, threats to indigenous people, disruption of species interactions, and other problems.
The Lorax by Dr. Seuss
This well-known book depicts a story of the conflict between an industry and the environment played out with colorful images and characters. The Lorax addresses issues about consumption and degradation of the environment. More importantly, it emphasizes the role of the individual, particularly the young boy who is told that the future of the environment is in his hands.
Judy Moody Saves the World by Megan McDonald
Old Turtle by Douglas Wood and Cheng-Khee Chee
Where Once There Was Wood by Denise Fleming
This book is brightly illustrated and offers a list of animals that are affected by the loss of a “forest, a meadow and a creek” due to development. At the end, the author gives some ideas on how to make a backyard habitat for animals and sources for more information.
