Wisconsin company develops special wild bird food
Chilton, Wis.-based Kaytee Products Inc. has introduced the
first wild bird food aimed at boosting birds' immune systems
and warding off disease. Production of "Nature's Defense," a
supplement-enhanced product, began in late December, and the
new wild bird food is just beginning to appear on retailers'
shelves.
The new product is created by a patented process that with
supplements that include natural herbs, active yeast
culture, lactic acid producing bacteria, digestive enzymes,
antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and extracts. Some of the
key ingredients in Nature's Defense include star anise,
ginger, garlic and Echinacea.
"The subject of avian health has been in the headlines
recently, and a healthy diet is a bird's only true defense
against disease," said Thane Maynard, naturalist and vice
president of the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.
"Providing backyard birds with an enhanced bird food like
Nature's Defense is similar to making sure your kids eat a
balanced diet and take their vitamins every morning. We're
providing birds with proper nutrition to protect them and
help them be strong."
Frank Chen, Ph.D., a scientist at Kaytee's avian research
center, said, "Particularly during the winter months, when
food and water are less available, backyard birds often
struggle to maintain a healthy diet. We developed Nature's
Defense for wild bird enthusiasts who are concerned about
avian health."
