Lion Cub, Puppy Are Animal Park's Odd Couple

Officials at the San Diego Wild Animal Park have a remarkable animal pairing on display for visitors.

A male lion club, Koza, was born in November and needed to be hand-raised, said park officials, because his mother delivered via C-section. Zookeepers were concerned that Koza needed a companion because of the social nature of lions, so Cairo, a mastiff puppy, is growing up with Koza.

Officials said Cairo has a remarkable story as well: He came to San Diego by way of the Gulf Coast area after he was rescued during Hurricane Katrina.

Although Koza was shy at first with his new roommate, said officials, he has become braver as time passes. The two now romp together, play with toys together and pounce on each other.

The puppy and cub will remain together until Koza is big enough to be introduced into the pride of lions at the park's Lion Camp, said zookeepers.
